In an exciting development for the Canberra community, the Women’s Shed Canberra recently had the privilege of hosting Andrew Barr, the ACT Chief Minister, for the announcement of the Social Enterprise Grants. This significant event, organised by The Mill House Ventures Ltd. and made possible by Thor’s Hammer, marked a pivotal moment for the Women’s Shed as they embark on a journey to expand their scope and launch a circular economy social enterprise.
The grant, generously awarded by the ACT Government, will empower the Women’s Shed to extend its reach and impact within the community. With support from partners like the East Hotel, the Women’s Shed is poised to launch an array of workshops across Belconnen and Griffith, in addition to their regular workshops at Thor’s Hammer.
These workshops represent a diverse range of skills and opportunities for participants. From mastering power tools to repairing household fixtures, such as leaking taps and insect screens, to building floating picture frames, the workshops offer practical knowledge and hands-on experience. Each session is designed to foster confidence and empower participants to tackle DIY projects with ease.

The significance of the Women’s Shed’s endeavours has been recognised by The Mill House Ventures Ltd., which administers the ACT Social Enterprise Grant Program. Among the 14 deserving recipients of the grant, the Women’s Shed stands out for its commitment to providing women of all backgrounds with a supportive environment to learn and hone skills in building trades.
Sunita Kotnala, Founder & President of Women’s Shed Canberra, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to make a positive impact in the community. “We are thrilled to receive this grant, which will enable us to further our mission of empowering women through skill-building and community support,” she remarked.
As the Women’s Shed prepares to embark on this new chapter of growth and innovation, they extend their heartfelt thanks to all who have supported them on this journey. With the backing of the ACT Government, The Mill House Ventures Ltd., and the broader community, the Women’s Shed is poised to make a lasting difference in the lives of women across Canberra.
Join us in celebrating this milestone achievement and stay tuned for updates as the Women’s Shed Canberra continues to make waves in the realm of social enterprise and community empowerment.
