Australian Women’s Weekly Article Showcases Women’s Sheds

We are thrilled to share some exciting news with our community! Women’s Sheds have been prominently featured in the June 2024 edition of the Australian Women’s Weekly. This feature article, titled “She’s Got the Power” by Alison Ratcliffe, not only highlights the vibrant and empowering environment of Women’s Sheds across the country but also links back to Women’s Sheds Australia.

The article, shared in full below, showcases how Women’s Sheds in Australia have been growing in popularity as safe and inclusive spaces where women of all ages can come together to learn new skills, engage in creative projects, and build strong social connections. These sheds provide a unique opportunity for women to work on woodworking, metalworking, gardening, and various crafts, fostering both personal growth and community spirit.

Women like Sharon Linolli are featured, who discovered a newfound sense of purpose and community at the Robertson She Shed in the NSW Southern Highlands. Sharon’s initial fear of retirement turned into a journey of learning and friendship as she mastered woodworking and built beautiful items for her home.

The feature also discusses the unique aspects of Women’s Sheds compared to the well-established Men’s Shed movement. While men often join sheds to continue building on lifetime skills and open up emotionally, women typically come to learn new hands-on skills but quickly build emotional connections.

Challenges remain, such as limited space and funding, but the spirit of resilience and innovation is strong. The Noosa Women’s Shed is building its own space alongside their local men’s shed, with mixed reactions from the men, but overall support and collaboration. The article mentions how sheds like Bayswater Women’s Hub in Perth manage to provide valuable workshops despite constraints, thanks to dedicated volunteers and creative solutions.

Australian Women’s Shed Association Establishment Lead Michelle Slater is interviewed and quoted in the article, discussing one of Women’s Shed Australia’s Key Priority Areas: increased funding for Women’s Sheds.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Australian Women’s Weekly and author Alison Ratcliffe for showcasing Women’s Sheds Australia, and we encourage you to buy copies of the Weekly to keep and share within your Sheds. This recognition brings well-deserved attention to the incredible efforts of our members, volunteers, and supporters who make these sheds vibrant spaces of learning and connection.
